camaleonda-5
Chameleon

Camaleonda, the system designed by Mario Bellini in 1970, returns after 50 years and speaks a contemporary language, between new structural solutions and sustainable choices.

The story: 50 years that have not passed
Presented to the public in 1970, Camaleonda has spanned 5 decades of design history as an absolute protagonist. Designed by Mario Bellini, this modular sofa has defined the aesthetics of interior design of an era thanks to its great success with the public and critics. Its presence is a constant in the major international design museums and on the sets of films that have defined the collective imagination. An object loved by design enthusiasts, antique dealers and interior decorators, it finally goes back into production, after careful design work that saw the CR&S of B&B Italia and Mario Bellini work closely together.

Mario Bellini's work is characterized by the synthesis between design and architecture and with Camaleonda he confirms a unique ability to move with ease between different design languages, between macro and micro, between geometry and padding, artificial and natural materials. As Bellini himself says, Camaleonda was born to fill a void: "On the threshold of the '70s, upholstered home furnishings were still mostly stagnant between tired variations of historical typologies and elitist radical-provocative leaps forward, which - although stimulating - were hardly capable of calling into question the relationship between the evolution of new behaviors in domestic space and the types of furnishings then available on the market."

With Camaleonda we find ourselves in the presence of a sofa conceived almost as an architectural element, capable of transforming the skyline of the interiors that host it. A landscape that does not reveal itself to be immobile and permanent, because its chameleon-like nature foresees change and transformation. A promise that starts from the name itself, as Bellini recalls: “Camaleonda is a neologism that I invented in 1970 by crossing two words: the name of that extraordinary animal that is the chameleon capable of adapting to the environment in which it finds itself and the word wave that indicates the curves of the sea and the desert. Both of these words describe the shape and function of this seat.” Camaleonda continues to live through an identity that becomes a perennial vintage, a current for every generation precisely because of its timeless qualities.

The present: the contemporary re-edition
In its re-edition, Camaleonda retains the elements that have made it a contemporary classic. By mutual agreement, Mario Bellini and B&B Italia have chosen to retain the 90x90 seat module, as well as the backrest and armrest, faithful to the original project of which the original templates for cutting the upholstery have also been recovered.

The generous polyurethane padding that forms the characteristic capitonné remains unchanged, even today obtained through the innovative system of cables, hooks and rings designed by Bellini in 1970, which guarantee its appearance and modularity. In fact, thanks to tie rods and rings, the modules can be unhooked and recombined at will, allowing the sofa to adapt to the evolving taste and dynamic needs of those who use it.

The fundamental characteristic of Camaleonda is its almost infinite modularity, a geometric nature that allows each element to become a sort of gigantic pixel through which to define your home environment. By attaching and detaching seats, backrests and armrests you can have the luxury of changing your mind as many times as you want, moving and redesigning the space. A concept dear to Mario Bellini: “Of all the objects I have designed, Camaleonda perhaps best represents the sense of freedom. The configurations that can be made are infinite.”

The padding has been thoroughly redesigned by the B&B Italia Research & Development Centre, to the point of making it even more comfortable than the original. In this way, the magical balance between the rigorous geometry of the square and the welcoming roundness of the padding is confirmed, further underlining the elasticity and tactile ergonomics that characterise many of Mario Bellini's design projects. Camaleonda can be upholstered using the entire range of B&B Italia fabrics and leathers, providing a further variable to the myriad of possible combinations.

Camaleonda is a dynamic, lively and sincere object, not at all enigmatic, which can be modified at will while always maintaining its peculiar and unique identity.

The future: sustainability and circularity
The re-release of Camaleonda does not want to talk to us about the past, on the contrary, it aims to reread an indisputable classic from a contemporary perspective.

Aesthetics, dimensions, proportions and system of use have remained unchanged, but the interior has been completely redesigned without nostalgia. “When I was asked to update Camaleonda - says Mario Bellini - I immediately had a clear idea that I should and could not do anything at all. Change the shape? No, because conceived in this way it was as good then as it is today. Change the materials? Yes, and for this I spoke with a leading company in the ability to transform a piece of furniture into something sustainable.”

The “sandwich” structure of Camaleonda is composed of layers made of recycled or recyclable materials, easily disassembled. The starting base of the seat, backrest and armrests is made of wooden panels. The sofa rests on the floor with a series of spherical feet in FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified beech wood. The padding of the seat, backrests and armrests is made of polyurethane with different densities and bearing capacities. The greatest complexity is found in the seat, whose elements are shaped so as to fit together and make each layer interact, while ensuring absolute comfort. The different layers generate empty spaces designed to create a comfortable spring effect. This engineering choice also allows the interior of the sofa to be disassembled and therefore easily recyclable. The padding is protected by a removable covering in Dacron, a fully recyclable synthetic fabric obtained from recycled PET, the same material used to make common plastic bottles.
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0674/1881/6757/files/camaleonda-b-b-italia-01-pro-sq-arcit18_5de58083-e17b-4edf-bf37-6addb52bca54.jpg?v=1791553867
